Your Right to Data Deletion

At SnapBites, we respect your privacy and your right to control your personal data. Under data protection laws including GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act), you have the right to request deletion of your personal information.

How to Request Data Deletion

Option 1: Delete Your Account (Recommended)

The fastest way to delete your data is to delete your account:

  • In-App: Settings → Account → Delete My Account
  • More Info: Visit our Account Deletion page for detailed instructions

When you delete your account, all of your personal data is automatically deleted within 30 days.

Option 2: Request Specific Data Deletion

If you want to delete specific data without closing your account, you can:

  • In the App: Delete individual food logs, photos, or other content
  • By Email: Request deletion of specific data categories (see below)

Email Deletion Request

Send your data deletion request to:

Subject: Data Deletion Request

Required Information:

  • Your full name
  • Email address associated with your SnapBites account
  • Username (if you have one)
  • Specific data you want deleted (or "all personal data")
  • Verification: Last 4 digits of phone number OR last login date

What Data Can Be Deleted

Personal Account Data

  • Name, email, and profile information
  • Account credentials
  • Profile pictures
  • Contact information

Nutrition & Health Data

  • Food logs and meal records
  • Photos of meals
  • Nutritional tracking data
  • Dietary preferences and goals
  • Progress data (streaks, achievements)
  • Notes and journal entries

Social Data

  • Group memberships
  • Leaderboard history
  • Comments and interactions
  • Friend connections

Technical Data

  • Device information
  • App usage data
  • Login history
  • IP addresses

Deletion Timeline

Verification (1-2 business days)

We will verify your identity to ensure we're deleting the correct person's data. You may be asked to:

  • Confirm your email address (via verification link)
  • Provide additional verification if needed

Processing (5-30 days)

  • Active Systems: Data deleted from production databases within 5 business days
  • Backups: Data removed from backup systems within 30 days
  • Logs: System logs purged within 90 days

Confirmation

You will receive an email confirmation once your data has been deleted.

Data We May Retain

In limited circumstances, we may retain certain data even after a deletion request:

Legal Obligations

  • Transaction Records: Financial records required for tax compliance (7 years)
  • Legal Claims: Data needed for active legal proceedings or disputes
  • Regulatory Requirements: Data we're legally required to keep

Legitimate Business Purposes

  • Fraud Prevention: Anonymized data to detect and prevent fraud
  • Security: Security logs to protect against malicious activity
  • Analytics: Aggregated, anonymized data that cannot identify you

Technical Limitations

  • Backup Systems: Data in backups deleted within 90 days as backups cycle
  • Cached Data: Temporary cached data deleted within 30 days

Any retained data will be anonymized (stripped of personal identifiers) wherever possible.

Exceptions to Deletion

We may deny or delay a deletion request in these situations:

  • Active Investigation: If your account is under investigation for Terms of Service violations
  • Legal Hold: If we're legally required to preserve data (e.g., court order, subpoena)
  • Pending Transaction: Until pending payments or refunds are processed
  • Security Concerns: If deletion would compromise security or enable fraud

If we deny or delay your request, we will explain why and provide information about your options.

Third-Party Data

If you connected third-party services to SnapBites (e.g., social media logins), you'll need to manage that data separately:

  • Apple Sign In: Manage in your Apple ID settings
  • Google Sign In: Manage at myaccount.google.com/permissions
  • Payment Processors: Contact Apple App Store or Google Play Store for payment data

Deleting data from SnapBites does not automatically delete data held by these third parties.

After Deletion

What Happens

  • You will no longer be able to access your account
  • Your profile will be removed from all groups and leaderboards
  • Friends will no longer see you in their connections
  • All personal data will be permanently deleted (no recovery possible)

Subscription Note

Deleting your data does NOT automatically cancel subscriptions. Make sure to cancel via:

  • iOS: Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions
  • Android: Play Store → Menu → Subscriptions

Data Export Before Deletion

Before deleting, you can download a copy of your data:

  1. In the app, go to Settings → Privacy
  2. Tap Download My Data
  3. Wait for export preparation (up to 24 hours)
  4. Download your data package (ZIP file)

Your Privacy Rights

In addition to deletion, you have other privacy rights:

  • Access: Request a copy of your data
  • Correction: Update inaccurate information
  • Portability: Receive your data in a machine-readable format
  • Objection: Object to certain processing activities
  • Restriction: Request limited processing of your data
